Over a quarter of a million pupils in Scotland have now attended Choices for Life.

The fun and interactive programme is designed to prepare pupils for secondary school and the choices and opportunities they may face.  It provides information and guidance to help young people resist negative peer pressure, and illustrates the benefits of choosing a healthy lifestyle free from harmful substances, including tobacco, alcohol and illegal drugs.

Speaking at the launch event in 2010, Detective Superintendent Willie MacColl, National Drugs Co-ordinator, Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency said: “We want to make a long-term impact on these issues and education is vital to reducing the demand for harmful substances.  It’s crucial that young people are well informed and that they are empowered to think for themselves and make the right choices for their future.  With the Choices for Life events we aim to help them do that through the use of positive messages and providing alternative lifestyle choices to substance misuse. The event is delivered in a way that children can easily understand and we know from feedback that pupils thoroughly enjoy it and that they think about the issues involved. We need families to also talk about these issues at home.  By taking a joined-up approach we can ensure young people are aware of the facts and are able to reach the right decisions about drug use."

Chief Constable Stephen House, Strathclyde Police said: “Strathclyde Police remains committed to engaging with children and young people, our adults of tomorrow, and I believe the Choices for Life event helps to provide insight, knowledge and confidence to Primary 7 pupils, better equipping them to resist negative influences and make the right lifestyle choices with regard to tobacco, alcohol and illicit drugs. For those attending, Choices for Life is free, it is educational and it is fun; we are sure that the pupils will enjoy it and be able to make safer and more informed decisions as they make the key transition from primary to secondary school.

The success of last year’s event and the numbers attending this year are testament to the overwhelming support for Choices for Life.
